Gender Reveal Safety Checklist
Published July 21, 2026
Gender reveal celebrations involving smoke, powder, or pyrotechnic products carry real safety and legal considerations. This checklist covers the basics — always follow the specific manufacturer instructions for any product you use.
Before the event
- Check your local and state regulations on fireworks, smoke devices, and powder cannons — rules vary widely by city and county, and some areas restrict or ban them entirely, especially during dry seasons.
- Check whether your venue (if rented) has its own restrictions on smoke or pyrotechnic products.
- Read the full instructions for any reveal product before the day of the event, not during setup.
- Have a fire extinguisher or water source on hand if using any combustible product.
Choosing a safe location
- Keep any smoke, powder, or pyrotechnic reveal moment well away from structures, dry grass, vehicles, and guests.
- Check wind direction and avoid pointing any device toward guests, homes, or roads.
- Never use pyrotechnic or combustible reveal products indoors.
During the reveal
- Designate one person to operate the reveal device — avoid last-minute hand-offs.
- Keep children and pets at a safe distance from the reveal moment itself.
- Follow the manufacturer’s minimum safe distance guidance.
After the reveal
- Let any spent device cool completely before handling or disposal, following manufacturer guidance.
- Dispose of spent materials according to local regulations.
- Do a walk-through for residue, especially if children or pets will be back in the area soon after.
Weather considerations
- High wind can carry smoke or powder toward guests or structures — have an indoor backup reveal method ready (balloons or confetti work well indoors).
- Dry, high fire-risk conditions may mean any combustible product should be avoided entirely — check local burn bans before the event.
This checklist is general guidance, not a substitute for your product’s specific instructions or your local laws. When in doubt, choose a non-combustible reveal method like balloons or confetti.
